Oh the Adventures of the Team Bond Crayfish!

We had quite a week last week with many adventures!  I had each group create entries for their crayfish to add to our diary.  One of our crayfish perished over the weekend, due to an inferred attack by Michael Jackson Jr.  The children do believe that the homicide may have been in self-defense, as Michael Jackson Jr. now only has 1 claw.  Here is a photo from the funeral that took place this morning.
Paige and the rest of the Rose Group was in charge of creating the funeral ceremony.  Some of the children even dressed up for the occasion. In a moving ceremony, Paige even created an original song in honor of Snapple, the departed crayfish.  I am hoping that I can transfer it from my phone to add to this blog...as it is precious!  It was also nice to see that the children had respect for the funeral, and even shared some powerful statements about their faith and Snapple!  I love to see what chidlren are capable of when they have the opportunities to express themselves and have ownership over their adventures in learning!

Dear Diary,
In the last week in Team Bond a crayfish died. Her name was Snapple. Michael Jackson Jr. killed her. I stayed out of he fight. We also have one of our friends out of town for a few days.  Lil' Buddy went to a first grade classroom in Brighton at Hornung Elementary.  Mrs. Bond's son, Carson, wanted to show his class the crayfish.  It fits with their learning, as they have been studying frogs...well tadpoles, from what I hear!  It was a long week I should go to sleep. Love, Wills

Lilac Group
Hey!  My friend died this week.  Her name was Snapple. Michael Jackson Jr. is now a murderer for killing Snapple.  We think they were fighting and Snapple managed to to take his claw off. But he shoved his other  claw into Snapple. We found that out  because Snapple was laying dead.
On the positive side, many of us have molted!  I am one of them.  Did you know that we like to eat our old shells?  It helps us get more calcium to grow our new shell harder. Well, I have to go to Snapple's funeral.
Love, Speedy

Sea Blue Not Hungry

Today Hannah got me out of my big bin, aka my habitat.  Trinity touched me, and I freaked out. Cayden tamed me.  Zack touched me and I freaked out again.  After that, I got really relaxed.  I did not feel like eating today, and the group was worried about me.  The kids had to go to PE, so Mrs. Bond let me stay in my feeding bin while the kids were gone.  All of my friends got put back in our habitat.

Rocky Enjoyed His Meal Today

Today in Team Bond Mrs. Bond took this cool picture of me.  Everyone was crowding around me.  I got very annoyed.  Then finally they left.  Today was kinda fun.  The kids didn't have much time to observe me, as they had to get to PE.

The Crayfish Get New Homes!

May 9, 2012
Today was an exciting day in Team Bond!  Me and my friends got new homes.  They really are 1/2 of a plant container, but they provide me and my friends with a good shelter.  Each shelter is marked with a different shape.  The students of Team Bond are going to see if each of us pick favorite homes to live in each day.  They created a question, "Will my crayfish have a favorite home?" They also created a hypothesis.  Paige's hypothesis was, "Yes, because most animals mark their territories."  Cayden's hypothesis was, "Yes, because they probably get used to the one they were staying in."  They will keep track of where my friends and I are hanging out for the next 4 afternoons.  In addition, the students also kept track of our behaviors.  Some of the kids enjoyed seeing what we would do when were on their desks.

Another exciting part of today's science time was, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, otherwise known as MHC according to Jake, were hanging out with us.  In fact, one of them even took a very short swim with Willis, the one armed crayfish.  Zackery acted fast as the lifeguard and swooped in before Willis noticed.  Zackery was a bit worried about the MHC, but it was fine.  Maddie took a lot of cool photos today with the kids.  You can find them attached to our Structures of Life Zap: http://5k8g.zapd.co/

Happy Wednesday!

Love,
Lil' Buddy

Our First Weekend in Team Bond

5/7/12
Hi, this is Snapple.  This weekend was a blast!  I got to sleep like a baby.  Today the kids thought I was Lil' Buddy.  I had to go to a new tank, but then the kids figured it out.  I just wanted to see my owners and so I could show them love. This weekend I also saw bubbles.  I tried to pinch them, but they didn't pop.  Some of the kids thought these were eggs, but Mrs. Bond said they were just bubbles.  Crayfish eggs stay underneath the mom crayfish near her swimmerets. (PJ)

5/7/12
I would never survive if I didn't have pincers.  I'm glad I am big too!  Jade learned that I put my tail up if I want to mate.  She has crayfish at home.  (JH)

5/7/12
Today I got cat food.  I didn't eat it.  I'm a little cranky today.  When Aidan tried to touch me, I tried to pinch him.  He was not being respectful, as he tried to put a Ninjago in my water.  I hope that Aidan is more respectful tomorrow.  Mrs. Bond said that if you can't be respectful, you will have to read about crayfish out of a book instead of seeing them up close. A New Group of Crayfish Visit Team Bond May 2012

Yesterday on May 2, 2012, we received a shipment of 7 crayfish.  The students loved getting to know them, as each group took 1 to observe.  Naturally, without any instruction, children began comparing the crayfish and making inferences about them.  It was also interesting that 5 out of the 6 groups named their crayfish without me instructing them to do so.  I loved hearing their reasoning behind their names too!  Throughout the next few weeks we will add entries to this blog featuring several students.  Each student will be keeping their own diary in their science notebook.

So, let's meet the Team Bond Crayfish Team!
Willis, which is in honor of Jake's favorite name.
Snappy, who likes to snap, as well as named after Snapple, Paige's favorite drink.
Sea Blue, named after the coloring of the claws.
Speedy, named for his quick moves.
Rocky, named because he's brown like a rock and hard.  Also because she pushes out her  pincers,       looking like she's lifting weights or punching.
Little Buddy, because she was left all alone in the main habitat and needed to join one of her friends.  She was little and needed a buddy, therefore, she is named Little Buddy.
And last but not least, Michael Jackson Jr.  Please read the entry below to learn how he was named.

Hi my name is Michael Jackson Jr.!  I'm a crayfish and also I'm a boy.  I love my habitat right now way better than living in the wild. You're probably wondering why my name is Michael Jackson Jr.  Well this might sound a little weird, but I can do the moonwalk.  How can you tell a female from a male?  A female has green-blue claws. Guess what?  We just got another crayfish added that is female.  Her name is Little Buddy.  Well I gotta go!  Bye! (LN)

Love,
Michael Jackson Jr.

May 3, 2012

Hi my name is Willis the Crayfish. I only have one claw. I eat cat food.  I like following spoons for my play time. When I first arrived at Team Bond, I was thinking in my mind, "Where am I now?"  Then someone took the cover off my tank.  I was scared. Then I heard the teacher calling groups. I was picked in the last group.  They came over and picked me up.

Sincerely,
Willis
